Make an Aluminium C-band satellite dish antenna in less than Rs600 Part 1

Make an Aluminium C-band satellite dish antenna in less than Rs600 and enjoy more than 180 free channels with no monthly charges

Materials needed: Aluminium strips of sufficient thickness (to withstand wind pressure), aluminium mesh / sheet, screws, nuts-bolts, Free-to-Air MPEG2 set-top box (MPEG4 DVB-S2 set-top box is recommended), C-band LNBF, Wires, F-connectors.

Tools needed: Pliers, Lock Planar, Hack saw, Drill machine, drill bits, screw driver, spirit-level, pen, paper, newspaper.

Procedure:

Plot this curve as per formula given below on a big newspaper.

Get the straight thick Aluminium strips of required length:

Bend the strips as shown below:

Finished Rib will look like this:

Make the edges even by using a hand planar:

Cut off extra portion of rib if any:

Go on making the ribs:

More the number of ribs, more well-defined and strong is the shape:

Next part: Drilling screw holes in the ribs, assembling the dish, making LNBF arm and floor/wall stand.

Great tutorial vinay,so no matter what size dish you want the formula is the same?

@Vinay can you explain the derivation of the formula from basic formula y^2=4ax?

Thanks Deep bhai. I am right now fitting the Aluminium solid metal sheet on the ribs. Later tomorrow I will connect to set-top box and present screenshot of various Hindi and Punjabi free channels received from Insat 4A satellite.

This 120cm dish is just due to request from members to make something affordable and light-weight. I also have bigger dishes being made.

hahaha ... yes Deep ji its like refreshing maths and geometry skills :P
Thats why i gave some ready x, y co-ordinates of the graph so that those interested can directly start with plotting graph without jumping into calculations D

Arsh, yes you are right, we can go on extending the curve to get a dish of desired size. The formula is the same. only y coordinate will change if the LNB focus point value takes some other value than the one shown above. For bigger plotting, staple 2 - 3 newspapers at the edges.

In short, lesser the focal length f, deeper is the dish and vice-versa.

The formula is derived from the focus of parabola equation as given here:

Ok. Thanks all.

So now each of these ribs have to be drilled to make holes at appropriate point like at the center and along the rib for fixing reflector sheet.
Mark the other points on the rib before drilling

Screws can be used to fix mesh/sheet on the ribs.

You can also use screw with washer and nuts.

No need of any formula/calculation to drill holes, just make sure that the sheet metal takes a parabolic shape after it is fixed to the ribs with screws.

Also more the number of screws holding the sheet, more well-defined is the parabolic reflector shape.
