3D printing technology is a game changer in the arts and crafts world.

3D printing technology is a game changer in the arts and crafts world.

"It really takes the lid off of what's possible," says Andrej Suskavcevic, president and CEO of the Craft and Hobby Association, in Elmwood Park, New Jersey. "It seems to me it'll provide a really good bridge between technology and hands-on crafting."

Randy Sarafan, technology editor at Instructables, a website for sharing do-it-yourself projects, calls 3D printing "mind-blowing. And the technology is adapting, changing and growing so fast."

Already, desktop 3D printers can make doodads, such as plastic rings, figurines, and small gears and parts. Sarafan prints his own robotic parts. A colleague printed a record that plays music. There are umpteen projects for printing cell phone covers. You can find advanced DIY projects at Thingiverse, a digital design-sharing website, and at Instructables.

"In a way, this reverses the industrial revolution and takes it back to people building things in their own workshops," says Ken Denmead, editorial director at Make magazine, which devoted its winter 2013 issue to 3D printing.

At-home, desktop 3D printers don't print high-quality pieces, say the artists who play around with them - not yet. Until they do, there also are companies willing to print your 3D artwork or objects for you.

Joshua Harker is a sculptor whose most fantastical design ideas were locked in his imagination until 3D printing became accessible.

"I've been drawing literally forever," says Harker, 43, of Chicago. "I wanted to develop the drawings I was doing three-dimensionally and there was absolutely no way to do it."

With 3D printing, he says, "there are all these possibilities to get my head around. There's a lot of room to explore and it's still exciting for me."

3D printer machines build up layers of extruded material - mostly plastics but also ceramics, metals, even a wood filament - one thin layer at a time using CAD (computer-aided design) software. Larger, commercial machines actually have been around since the mid-1980s.

Tabletop machines, which print primarily in plastics, have dropped in price in recent years. They cost a few hundred dollars to several thousand. Some notable desktop brands are Makerbot, Deezmaker and Cubify.

Newcomers enter the scene rapidly, says Denmead. One is Printrbot, whose Printrbot Jr. is the smallest and - at $400 - least expensive 3D printer on the market, according to Make. The magazine's reviews of more than a dozen 3D printers are available at Makezine.com, as are tips on using CAD modeling software.

Or skip the machine and focus on the CAD software, modeling and tweaking your art or object for printing by one of the many 3D printing services, such as Shapeways and Ponoko. A lot of the software, such as ReplicatorG, is free online.

This is the route many artists take.

"It's a low-overhead way to run a business," says Colleen Jordan of Atlanta, who makes 3-D-printed jewelry that she sells online at the Etsy.com store Wearable Planter, and through Fab.com.

Jordan, 25, who has a degree in industrial design, designs a 3D model in software such as SolidWorks or Rhino, then uploads the file to a printing service, often Shapeways. She warns that modeling software takes time and patience to learn, but otherwise the process is simple. She receives her finished pieces from the printer in a few weeks.

Jordan couldn't create her jewelry by traditional means, which involve tens of thousands of dollars to create molds and other manufacturing startup costs.

"I spent $25,000 on printing last year," she says. "If I were to put that into just making molds, I'd only have 30 products before shipping."

Instead, she prints her jewelry - diminutive planters that can hold tiny plant sprigs - only as needed.

Other artists echoed the cost savings of 3D printing on demand, and say the medium will create opportunities for young designers and inventors.

Jessica Rosenkrantz, co-founder and co-designer at Nervous System in Somerville, Massachusetts, prints art, jewelry and housewares in sterling silver, stainless steel and nylon plastic at Shapeways.

"It's the most affordable way to do it other than printing it yourself," says Rosenkrantz, 30, noting that a desktop printer couldn't manage her products' intricate designs.

Desktop 3D printers are good for messing around with and printing prototypes, says Jordan.

"It's more of a toy than a tool. It's a cool toy," says Jordan about her Makerbot 3D printer. "It's kind of cool to have around."

Denmead sees 3D printers changing the way artists create, hobbyists build and homeowners tinker.

"We're not going to need to send away for spare or replacement parts anymore," says Denmead. "We're going to be able to download a file from a company and fix the piece at home."

Sarafan likewise predicts that users won't need to understand 3D design software to play in the medium, and they'll be able to use apps to print from phones.

"It's stuff like that that is going to revolutionize the way people think of this technology," says Sarafan.

The Supreme Court said that no person should be arrested for posting objectionable comments on social networking sites without taking prior permission from senior police officials.

The apex court, which refused to pass an order for a blanket ban on the arrest of a person for making objectionable comments on websites, said state governments should ensure strict compliance of the Centre's January 9 advisory which said that a person should not be arrested without taking permission from senior police officials.

"We direct the state governments to ensure compliance with the guidelines (issued by Centre) before making any arrest," a bench of justices B S Chauhan and Dipak Misra said.

It said the court cannot pass an order for banning all arrest in such cases as operation of section 66A (pertaining to objectionable comments) of the Information Technology Act has not been stayed by the apex court which is examining its constitutional validity.

In view of public outrage over people being arrested for making comments or liking posts on Facebook, Centre had on January 9 issued advisory to all states and UTs asking them not to arrest a person in such cases without prior approval of a senior police officer.

The advisory issued by the Centre says that, "State governments are advised that as regard to arrest of any person in complaint registered under section 66A of the Information Technology Act, the concerned police officer of a police station may not arrest any person until she/he has obtained prior approval of such arrest from an officer, not below the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP) in metropolitan cities or of an officer not below the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) or Superintendent of Police (SP) at district level, as the case may be.

Nexus 4, the official Google phone, is available for pre-order on Flipkart, an e-commerce site, starting today at a price of Rs 25,990. The device will be shipped to consumers as soon as LG, which makes Nexus 4 for Google, officially launches it in India. The launch is expected by Friday.

Sources said that the pre-order is part of an exclusive deal Flipkart has struck with LG.

Once the device is officially launched, it will also be available in retail stores across India. Sources say that details like price and availability have already been finalized and LG is waiting for a nod from Google before formally announcing the device.

While Flipkart has listed only 16GB version of Nexus 4, LG is also expected to launch the 8GB model. The price of 8GB model is expected to be around Rs 20,000.

Nexus 4 has a 4.7-inch screen with 720P resolution. The phone is powered by a quad-core processor and has 2GB RAM. It has a 8MP primary camera and a 1.3MP front camera. But the real appeal of the device lies in the software it runs. Like all Nexus devices, Nexus 4 is powered by an unmodified version of Android and is guaranteed to get updates whenever Google comes out with the new version of the OS.

Google usually sells Nexus devices online through its Play store. But Nexus 4 is likely to be sold only by LG and its retail partners. When contacted, Google India refused to comment on the Nexus 4 launch details and availability.

The phone was launched in the global markets last year. At that time an LG executive claimed that it would be available in India in October. But the plans to launch it didn't materialize.

Incidentally, Nexus 4 has appeared in India just hours before Google I/O, the company's annual event for developers in San Francisco. Google is expected to announce a new version of Nexus 4 at the event. It is likely to have 32GB internal storage.

Google is also expected to unveil Android 4.3, a new version of the OS, at the event. Nexus 4 is likely to be among the first Android devices to get the updated software.

Here is an exciting news for Vodafone consumers who cross the Indian border frequently. The company has announced a new international roaming plan for the subscribers. The telco claims that the new plan will offer up to 90% discount on the data usage and 64% discount on voice calls while traveling 45 countries such as U.S. U.K., Australia, France, Italy, Singapore and more.

The international roaming plan available for a rental of Rs 2,499 and it is valid for 30 days. Vodafone will impose a charge of Rs 50/MB while roaming abroad, Rs 25 per minute and Rs 50 per minute for outgoing local and international calls. Also, the users will be charged Rs 50 per minute for the incoming calls.

As for the current international roaming rates are concerned, the outgoing local and international calls are charged Rs 70 per minute and Rs 140 per minute, while the incoming calls cost Rs 70 per minute.
It has to be noted that this new pack will be an add-on to the Rs 1,499 pack launched in 2012 offering 60% discount on international roaming on voice, data and SMS. Hopefully, this new international roaming pack will meet the requirements of the consumers and offer them hassle-free roaming experience.

Announcing the plan, Vivek Mathur, Chief Commercial Officer, Vodafone India said, "At Vodafone, we like to stay closely aligned with customer requirements and constantly work to add value for our customers.
Microsoft has revealed that Windows 8.1 will be coming to consumers as a free download later this year.

The announcement, by Tami Reller, Microsoft's Chief Marketing Officer, was first made at the JP Morgan Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in Boston on Tuesday before being confirmed by Microsoft in an official blog posting later that day.

The update, formerly dubbed 'Windows Blue,' will get its first public airing at the BUILD developers conference on June 26 before being made available in the Windows Store.

Though Microsoft claims to have sold 100 million Windows 8 licenses since the operating system was launched in October 2012, it has been the subject of criticism from both consumers and the press who have been less than happy with the fact that it has done away with the start button and that it uses two competing interfaces. Some data mining by the Guardian shows that while 100 million licenses may be in circulation, only 58 million computers are actually running Window 8, the others choosing to boot their computers in Windows.

On Friday, Frank X Shaw, the company's corporate vice president of corporate communications took to Microsoft's official blog to defend it. Placing much of the blame for the bad press it has been receiving on overzealous journalists looking for publicity and click-throughs rather than focusing on the facts; he wrote: "In this world where everyone is a publisher, there is a trend to the extreme -- where those who want to stand out opt for sensationalism and hyperbole over nuanced analysis. In this world where page views are currency, heat is often more valued than light. Stark black-and-white caricatures are sometimes more valued than shades-of-gray reality."

Google has signed licensing deals with Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment to launch a subscription music service that would compete with fast-growing start-up Spotify, according to a report on Tuesday in technology blog The Verge.

Google, the world's No. 1 search engine, could unveil the streaming music service at its annual developer conference, which kicks off on Wednesday, according to the report, which cited anonymous sources.

Google plans to create separate music subscription services to its mobile-focused Google Play store and to its YouTube video website, according to The Verge. The deals with Sony Music and Universal, whose catalogs include popular artists such as Rihanna and Bob Dylan, follow reports earlier this year that Google had signed a subscription deal with Warner Music Group.

Music streaming, or playing songs over the Internet, has in recent years begun to come into its own as listeners increasingly choose to stream songs from apps like Pandora or Spotify via their smartphones, rather than buy and store individual tracks.

Apple Inc is talking with music labels about tacking a subscription service option onto iTunes, sources have told Reuters.

Shares of Pandora were down 2.7 per cent at $16.30 in after hours trading on Tuesday. Google shares were essentially unchanged at $888.98 in after hours trading.

Research In Motion unveiled a lower-cost BlackBerry aimed at consumers in emerging markets stepping up its efforts to regain market share lost to Apple's iPhone and Android devices powered by Google's software.

The lower-cost gadget, called the Q5, is the company's third smartphone to run the new BlackBerry 10 system. It will have a physical keyboard, something that sets RIM's devices apart from Apple's iPhone and most Android phones.

The device will be available in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia (including the Asia Pacific region), and Latin America beginning in July. The Q5 isn't expected to be released in North America for now. The company did not disclose prices for the new phone.

The Q5 differs only slightly from the Q10. Both have 2GB of RAM, though the Q5 has only 8GB of flash memory compared to 16 for the Q10.

Both Q5 and Q10 have 2 megapixel front-facing cameras, but the Q5's rear-facing camera is only 5 megapixels, compared to the Q10 which has 8 megapixels and also records high-definition video.

The Q5 has a 3.1-inch LCD display, while the Q10 is 3.1 inches and LED.
